Dehydration, High Blood Count, or Real Clotting Risk?

Many adults over 60 have been told they have “thick blood” at some point—sometimes alongside advice to take daily aspirin. It sounds straightforward, but it is not a precise medical diagnosis, and treating it as one can lead to the wrong conversation.

The question matters because aspirin can be an important medicine for some people, while for others its bleeding risks may outweigh its benefits. The key is not simply your age, or whether a blood test once appeared concentrated. It is understanding what problem, if any, is actually being treated.

“Thick blood” can describe several different issues

People often use the same phrase to describe dehydration, a blood test showing a higher-than-expected concentration of blood cells, or concern about a tendency to form clots. These are not interchangeable problems.

For example, dehydration can make blood appear more concentrated without necessarily indicating a clotting disorder. A genuinely high hemoglobin or hematocrit result may call for proper assessment, but it does not automatically answer whether aspirin is appropriate. Meanwhile, conditions involving real clotting risk require a different kind of clinical discussion altogether.

Aspirin does not literally “thin” the blood

Aspirin is often described as a blood thinner, but the video explains the more accurate picture: it mainly makes platelets less sticky. Platelets help the body form a plug after an injury, but they can also contribute to harmful clots inside arteries.

The picture can become more complicated when aspirin is taken alongside other medicines, including pain relievers such as ibuprofen or prescription blood thinners. A medication that once seemed sensible may deserve a careful review as health conditions, risks and prescriptions change over time.
