Longevity advice is everywhere. One person recommends a supplement to “boost” cellular energy; another promotes a prescription drug, cold plunge, biological-age test or expensive treatment package. For anyone hoping to stay healthy and independent as they age, the choices can quickly become confusing—and costly.

The important question is not whether a longevity idea sounds scientifically interesting. It is whether it has been properly tested in people, improves outcomes that genuinely matter, and offers enough likely benefit to justify its cost and risks. This video puts 16 widely discussed longevity strategies through that practical test.

Interesting biology is not the same as proven benefit

Several popular approaches are based on real and compelling science. Rapamycin affects a cellular growth and repair pathway, while NMN is connected to NAD, a molecule involved in cellular energy and repair. Research into plasma exchange, biological-age clocks and hyperbaric oxygen also raises important scientific questions.

But a change in a laboratory marker, a biological-age score or an animal study does not automatically show that a healthy person will become stronger, less frail, avoid disease or live longer. The video explores why this distinction is so important—and why promising research should not be mistaken for established treatment.

What should come before the expensive extras?

Many of the strongest foundations for healthy ageing do not look futuristic. Movement, cardiovascular fitness, muscle strength, sleep, dietary patterns and meaningful social connection can seem almost too ordinary to compete with high-tech longevity claims. Yet these are the areas where human evidence is often most relevant to the outcomes people care about: function, mobility, metabolic health, cardiovascular risk and independence.

The video also separates an accessible starting point, such as walking more, from deliberately improving aerobic fitness. It considers why maintaining muscle becomes especially important after 60, when strength can provide valuable reserve during illness, surgery or periods of reduced activity.

When “optional” may be the honest answer

Not every strategy falls neatly into a yes-or-no category. Fasting, sauna use and wearables may be useful in the right circumstances, but their role is more nuanced than many headlines suggest. A wearable can support behaviour change or flag a question worth discussing with a clinician, for example, without being a longevity treatment in itself.

Likewise, fasting may help some people create structure around eating, but it is not automatically a good fit if it compromises protein intake, muscle maintenance or safety. The video looks at these trade-offs without dismissing useful tools simply because they are not magic.

Why this matters for healthy ageing

For adults over 60, the goal is not to chase every new protocol. It is to make sensible decisions about what deserves time, effort and money—and what may be better left as an area to watch.
